Jobs for the Garden Calendar

Spring:

Planting, as soon as the soil conditions are warm enough. This is a good time to add any new plants or re-plant existing borders. It’s also a good time to mulch your borders to add nutrients, improve soil structure and to retain moisture. Roses require pruning at this time, as well as some shrubs like Buddleja davidii and Hydrangers. If you have Salix (willows) or Cornus (dogwoods) which you grow for the coloured stems in the winter months, this is the time to prune the shoots hard back to their base (stooling).

Other jobs to be doing: Lift, divide and replant congested perennials. Dead head spring flowering bulbs. Check borders, weed, mulch and look out for pests and disease. If you are planning new patios or any landscaping then now is the time if you haven’t already done so. Remember to keep your lawnmower blades on a high setting at the beginning and then gradually reduce over the weeks ahead. Plan your gardening diary for the months ahead.

Summer:

This is the time to enjoy all your hard work done in the Spring, but there are still jobs to be done, including lawns to mow and edge, dead heading, shrub pruning, supporting flowers, weeding, replenishing mulches, pruning apple and pear trees after the natural June drop to increase sunlight to the fruit and don’t forget to order your Spring flowering bulbs for planting in Autumn.

Other tasks are re-designing borders and landscaping for winter builds/spring planting.

Autumn:

This is a good time to trim hedging, clear and mulch borders, plant new hedging, lift and divide perennials, clear fallen leaves, scarify and aerate lawns, plant Spring flowering bulbs and plant up new borders.

Winter:

This is the time to keep the garden tidy by clearing leaves, prune trees and hedging, winter prune apple and pear trees, redesign garden and implement landscape builds, mulch borders, treat fencing and pergolas, service garden machinery and plant new hedging.

This is a brief summary of the year in your garden, just to give some idea of the tasks that we can help you with and advise you on. Please contact us for enquiries.
